All motor vehicles in India must be registered before they can be used on public roads. The Kalyan RTO handles two types of registration:
Temporary Registration
Temporary registration is granted at the time of purchase and is valid for 30 days (as per Rule 42 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989). It is typically arranged by the vehicle dealer and serves as authorisation for the vehicle to be driven on public roads until permanent registration is completed.
Permanent Registration
Permanent registration is mandatory for all motor vehicles operating on Indian roads. For non-transport vehicles, the registration certificate (RC) is valid for 15 years from the date of issue, after which renewal is required.
• Form 20 (application for registration)
• Sales certificate (Form 21) from the dealer
• Form 22A with roadworthiness and pollution compliance declaration
• Vehicle insurance certificate
• Address proof of the owner
• PAN card / Form 60 (for all vehicles except two-wheelers)
• Invoice of purchase (if lifetime road tax is paid)
Several vehicle and licence services can be accessed online through the Maharashtra Transport Department portal (transport.maharashtra.gov.in) and the national Parivahan portal (parivahan.gov.in):
• Apply for a learner's licence
