Twenty-nine countries and territories admit an Indian passport holder on the strength of a valid Schengen visa: seventeen with no separate visa at all, eight that still issue a visa on arrival or a conditional e-visa, and four territories. Almost every one attaches a condition, and the condition is what gets people refused (destination immigration authorities and IATA-sourced entry rules, accessed 2026-08-27). A row without its condition is worse than no row, so every line below carries one.
This guide is maintained by Zurich Kotak General Insurance, an IRDAI-registered general insurer in India and part of the Zurich Insurance Group.
How Zurich Kotak fits in: A Schengen short-stay visa requires travel medical insurance with minimum coverage of EUR 30,000 under Article 15(3) of the EU Visa Code, and that condition is the authority’s, applying whoever you buy the policy from. Zurich Kotak issues Schengen-geography policies with sum insured up to USD 1,000,000, well clear of that minimum, alongside medical evacuation, repatriation, baggage loss or delay and trip cancellation for specified reasons up to the limits of the plan you buy, issued online once your dates are fixed. Geography is the second thing to check, because a policy written for Schengen is not automatically written for the Mexico, Georgia or Gulf legs listed further down.

If the document in your passport is a US visa rather than a Schengen one, that is a different list with different conditions: see visa-free countries for Indians with a valid US visa . This page covers the Schengen visa only.
Countries that admit you with no separate visa
These seventeen let an Indian passport holder in on the Schengen visa alone. Read the condition column before you read the country column.
Country | The exact condition | Maximum stay on this basis |
Albania | Multiple-entry Schengen visa already used at least once to enter a Schengen country, or a Schengen residence permit | 90 days |
Andorra | Double- or multiple-entry Schengen visa or residence permit. Andorra has no visa of its own and is only reachable through France or Spain, so you re-enter Schengen on the way out | Not applicable |
Belarus | Schengen or EU visa, arriving and departing through Minsk National Airport only, and not travelling to or from Russia, including airside transit | Not stated |
Belize | Valid Schengen visa | 90 days, visa exempt |
Bosnia and Herzegovina | Valid multiple-entry EU or Schengen visa | Unresolved. The available source reads up to 6 months, which looks like the national visa’s maximum rather than the substitution allowance. Treat 30 days as the working figure and confirm with the embassy |
Colombia | Valid Schengen C or D visa | Not stated |
Cyprus | Double- or multiple-entry Schengen “C” visa. Cyprus is in the EU but not in Schengen, which is exactly why this rule exists | Within the Schengen visa’s own validity |
Georgia | Valid Schengen visa or residence permit (a US, UK, Japanese, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, Israeli, South Korean, Irish or GCC one also works) | 90 days in any 180 |
Guatemala | Valid Schengen visa (Canadian or US also accepted) | Not stated |
Honduras | Valid Schengen visa (Canadian or US also accepted) | Not stated |
Mexico | Valid Schengen visa or permanent residence document. Tourism, transit or business | Not stated |
Moldova | Valid C or D visa or residence permit from Schengen, the EU or the UK | 90 days |
Montenegro | Valid Schengen visa or residence permit | 30 days |
North Macedonia | Double- or multiple-entry Schengen “C” visa, physically inserted in the passport. Digital visas and card residence permits are explicitly excluded. Proof of onward travel required | 15 days only, the shortest here |
Peru | Valid Schengen visa or permanent resident permit, valid at least 6 months from arrival | 180 days in any 365, the longest here |
Philippines | Valid Schengen visa or residence permit | 30 days, non-extendible, tourism only. It upgrades the plain 14-day visa-free entry Indians already get (Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs, accessed 2026-08-27) |
Serbia | Valid visa or residence permit from any EU or Schengen state | 90 days in any 180, inside the visa’s validity |
Countries where you still get a visa, just an easier one
In these eight the Schengen visa does not waive the visa. It qualifies you for one at the counter or online, and you still pay.
Country | The exact condition | What you actually get |
Armenia | Valid EU or Schengen visa or residence permit | Visa on arrival |
Antigua and Barbuda | Valid Schengen visa or residence | Visa on arrival, USD 100, approx INR 9,540, 30 days |
Bahamas | Valid Schengen visa | Visa on arrival, 3 months |
Bahrain | Valid Schengen visit visa | Visa on arrival, 2 weeks single entry or 3 months multiple |
Oman | Valid Schengen visa or residence permit | Visa on arrival, 14 days |
Saudi Arabia | Two-entry or multiple-entry short-stay Schengen visa, already used at least once | Visa on arrival up to 90 days, SAR 440, approx INR 11,200, card payment only. Cash is not accepted |
Turkey | Valid Schengen visa or residence permit | A conditional single-entry e-visa, 30 days. It is not a waiver, and an Indian passport alone does not qualify for the e-visa at all |
UAE | Valid EU or Schengen visa or residence permit valid 6 or more months, and you must be residing in the issuing region | Applied for online in advance, not issued at the border. GDRFA calls the product a visa on arrival, but you apply at smart.gdrfad.gov.ae , allow about 48 hours, and it arrives by email. 14 days, extendable by 14 |
Territories that accept a Schengen visa
Four territories run their own rules, and two of them are stricter than any country above.
Territory | The exact condition | Stay |
Akrotiri and Dhekelia | Follows the Cyprus rule, so a double- or multiple-entry Schengen “C” visa | As Cyprus |
Gibraltar | Multiple-entry Schengen visa only. A Schengen residence permit, permanent or temporary, does not qualify | Not stated |
Kosovo | Valid multi-entry Schengen visa or a biometric Schengen residence permit. Serbia will not recognise an entry made from Kosovo unless you entered Kosovo from Serbia first | 15 days |
Sint Maarten | Multiple-entry short-stay Schengen visa, an authorisation for temporary stay, or a Schengen residence permit | Not stated |
Currency note. Fees convert at 1 USD = INR 95.376 (XE, 2026-08-26), with riyal and dirham figures going through those currencies’ fixed US dollar pegs. Fees are set in local currency and the rupee figure moves, so treat it as an estimate and check before you pay.
The four conditions that get people refused
A country appearing on this page is not the same as you qualifying. Four variables decide it, and competitor lists routinely print the country and drop all four.
1. Used against unused. Albania and Saudi Arabia require the Schengen visa to have been used at least once to actually enter the Schengen Area. A visa issued last week and never stamped fails.
2. Multiple entry against single entry. Cyprus, North Macedonia, Andorra, Kosovo, Gibraltar and Sint Maarten need a double- or multiple-entry visa. A single-entry Schengen visa is not enough, and it is the most common Indian tourist visa of all.
3. Sticker against card. North Macedonia requires the visa physically inserted in the passport, which rules out digital visas and card residence permits. Gibraltar accepts a multiple-entry Schengen visa but rejects a Schengen residence permit outright, permanent or temporary.
4. Schengen against EU. They are different sets. The EU includes Ireland, which is not in Schengen; Schengen includes Norway, Switzerland and Iceland, which are not in the EU. Where a country writes “EU member state”, a Norwegian or Swiss Schengen visa may not qualify.
Three rules are stricter than the general pattern and deserve saying plainly. North Macedonia gives 15 days, not the 90 that half the internet reports. Belarus works only through Minsk National Airport and is void if you are travelling to or from Russia, including without leaving the airport. Peru wants at least six months of validity left on the visa when you arrive.
Entry stays at the immigration officer’s discretion in every case. A return ticket, confirmed accommodation and proof of funds are commonly asked for, and the officer can still say no.
Holding a Schengen visa and adding a second country to the trip? The medical cover you bought for the Schengen leg may not extend to Mexico, Peru or the Gulf, because the geography on the policy decides it. Get a travel insurance quote for the whole itinerary rather than one country of it.
Countries commonly on these lists that do not belong
Naming what does not qualify is the more useful half of this page, because a wrong row here gets somebody refused at a border.
Country | Why it is not on our list |
Bulgaria and Romania | Both became full Schengen members on 1 January 2025, land borders included, after air and sea borders opened on 31 March 2024. A Schengen visa is directly valid there, not a substitute. Listing them as substitution countries was true in 2023 and is simply wrong now, and most competing pages still do it |
Croatia | Joined the Schengen Area on 1 January 2023. Same reasoning: your Schengen visa already covers it |
Nicaragua | Eliminated its substitute-visa programme in February 2026. A Schengen visa no longer helps, and Indians must apply in advance |
Panama | The rule names a multiple-entry visa from the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Singapore or an EU member state, used at least once, with a year of validity left. That wording is EU, not Schengen, so Norwegian, Swiss and Icelandic Schengen visas are doubtful |
Costa Rica | Worded as a multiple-entry visa from Canada or an EU member state. Same problem as Panama |
Dominican Republic | Worded as Canada, the US or any EU member state. Same problem |
Qatar | Indians already enter on the passport alone, subject to booking accommodation through Discover Qatar. A Schengen visa adds nothing |
Sao Tome and Principe | No Schengen substitution could be verified in any acceptable source, so it is left out rather than guessed at |
South Korea is the one to be careful with. Holding a Schengen visa and travelling to or from a Schengen country, an Indian passport holder may be granted a 30-day tourist or transit visa. That is discretionary, not an entitlement, and it is why Korea is not in the tables above. Do not book on the assumption.
The Schengen visa’s own insurance requirement, which is separate from anything we sell
The Schengen visa application itself requires travel medical insurance with minimum coverage of EUR 30,000, about INR 33.4 lakh at 1 EUR = INR 111.3475 (ECB, 2026-08-26). That is the visa authority’s rule, set in law, not a recommendation from an insurer.
EU Visa Code Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, Article 15(3), requires the cover to be valid throughout the territory of the Member States and to cover the entire period of the intended stay or transit, for repatriation on medical grounds, urgent medical attention, emergency hospital treatment or death (EU Visa Code, EUR-Lex, accessed 2026-08-27). Applicants for a multiple-entry visa prove cover for the first intended visit and sign a declaration acknowledging they need it for later ones.
A warning on the UAE row, because its name is misleading. The UAE’s product is called a visa on arrival, and it is not one. GDRFA’s own published steps are an online application at smart.gdrfad.gov.ae , roughly 48 hours of processing, and the visa emailed on approval. It is also limited to Indian passport holders residing in the US, UK or EU, not to Indian residents travelling from India. Turning up at a Dubai counter on the strength of the name is how people get stranded.
None of the countries on this page is stated here to require insurance for entry. The EUR 30,000 rule attaches to the Schengen visa, not to Mexico, Georgia or the UAE. Where one of them does treat cover as an entry condition, its own immigration authority says so, so check there.
Zurich Kotak issues Schengen-geography travel policies with sum insured up to USD 1,000,000, comfortably above the EUR 30,000 minimum, along with medical evacuation, repatriation, baggage and trip disruption cover up to plan limits. Claims run through Europ Assistance India, cashless or reimbursement: intimate a cashless claim within 24 hours of admission and send reimbursement documents within 30 days of returning. The 24x7 assistance line is +91 22 6734 7863. If your itinerary leaves Europe, check the geography on the policy, because an Asia-geography plan does not cover a Mexico leg.
Where this sits among the other lists
A Schengen visa is one route into these countries and often not the only one. Several of the rows above also run a plain visa on arrival for Indian passport holders, which may be simpler than proving a substitution rule at the counter: visa on arrival countries for Indians has that list. For Europe itself, visa-free countries in Europe for Indians covers what the Indian passport reaches without any visa, and Europe tourist visa for Indians covers applying for the Schengen visa in the first place.
Frequently asked questions
Which countries can Indians visit with a Schengen visa? Twenty-nine countries and territories. Seventeen admit you with no separate visa, including Albania, Georgia, Mexico, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Peru, the Philippines, Serbia and Colombia. Eight still issue a visa on arrival or a conditional e-visa, including Turkey, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain. Four territories accept one, including Kosovo and Gibraltar. Every one attaches a condition.
Does the Schengen visa have to be used before it counts elsewhere? For some countries, yes. Albania and Saudi Arabia require the visa to have been used at least once to enter the Schengen Area before it is accepted. A newly issued, never stamped visa fails that test.
Does a single-entry Schengen visa work? Often not. Cyprus, North Macedonia, Andorra, Kosovo, Gibraltar and Sint Maarten all require a double- or multiple-entry visa. Since single entry is the most common Schengen visa issued to Indian tourists, check the entry count on your sticker before booking.
Do Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia still accept a Schengen visa as a substitute? No, and the reason is good news. All three are now full Schengen members, Croatia from 1 January 2023 and Bulgaria and Romania from 1 January 2025, so a Schengen visa is directly valid there rather than a substitute. Pages still listing them as substitution countries are out of date.
How long can I stay in North Macedonia on a Schengen visa? Fifteen days, and only with a double- or multiple-entry Schengen “C” visa physically inserted in your passport. Digital visas and card residence permits do not qualify, and proof of onward travel is required. The 90-day figure that circulates widely is wrong.
Is travel insurance compulsory on these trips? For the Schengen visa itself, yes: EU Visa Code Article 15 requires travel medical insurance with minimum coverage of EUR 30,000 for the visa application. For the countries on this page, that rule does not apply, and where any of them treats cover as an entry condition its own immigration authority says so.
