Travel Insurance for Thailand

Travel insurance for Thailand gives Indian travellers emergency medical cover, hospitalisation, baggage and trip protection for the duration of a Thailand trip, and it matters because your entry route into Thailand and your medical safety net are two separate things. Whether you arrive on a visa on arrival, the current visa exemption or a tourist e-visa, none of those permissions pays a Bangkok hospital bill. A Zurich Kotak Smart Travel policy does. Zurich Kotak General Insurance is an IRDAI-registered general insurer in India and part of the Zurich Insurance Group, and this page covers what a Thailand plan includes, what it excludes, how much cover to take and how to buy.

Why you need travel insurance for Thailand

You need travel insurance for Thailand because medical care abroad is charged at full private rates, your entry permission does not include any health cover, and the most common tourist accidents in Thailand are exactly the ones that turn into large, upfront hospital bills. Thai private hospitals require payment before discharge, so a serious injury without cover can mean tens of thousands of dollars paid out of pocket.

Visa-on-arrival entry still needs cover

Arriving on a visa on arrival, the visa exemption or an e-visa gets you through immigration, but it gives you no medical safety net. Entry status and insurance are independent. As of 2026-06-30 Thailand's 60-day visa exemption was still in force at the border for Indians, but a cabinet-approved reversion to a 15-day Visa on Arrival is pending publication and would take effect 15 days after it is gazetted (The Thaiger). Whichever route you enter on, the medical cover decision is yours to make. For the wider picture, see our guide to visa-free countries for Indians and why visa-free is not insurance-free.

What can go wrong on a Thailand trip

The usual Thailand claims are medical emergencies, rented-scooter accidents, lost baggage and flight delays. Motorbike and scooter injuries are the signature one, and a serious crash can leave a large private-hospital bill that must be settled before discharge. Thai public hospitals report roughly 100 million baht a year in unpaid bills from uninsured foreign visitors, which is why authorities have debated mandatory tourist cover (Travel Noire). A travel policy turns that exposure into a fixed, small premium.

What Zurich Kotak travel insurance for Thailand covers

A Zurich Kotak Smart Travel plan for Thailand covers emergency medical treatment, hospitalisation, baggage and trip disruptions, with a sum insured of up to USD 100,000 on the Excel tier or up to USD 500,000 on the Prime tier for the Asia geography that includes Thailand. It is backed by the Zurich Insurance Group's global presence and Zurich Kotak's claims service. For a primer on the components, see what travel insurance covers.

Emergency medical and hospitalisation

Emergency medical treatment is the core of any travel medical insurance for Thailand: the plan covers emergency treatment and hospitalisation in Thailand up to your chosen sum insured, which is up to USD 100,000 on the Excel tier and up to USD 500,000 on the Prime tier. Emergency medical treatment for a pandemic illness, including but not limited to COVID-19, is covered (Zurich Kotak). For travellers aged 56 and above, sub-limits apply, such as ICU cover up to USD 3,250 a day and surgical expenses up to USD 15,000. Given that a serious scooter injury can produce a very large private-hospital bill, this is the cover that matters most.

Baggage, passport and personal-belongings cover

The plan covers lost, delayed or damaged baggage, plus help if your passport is lost or stolen, up to the limits set out in your policy schedule.

Trip delay, cancellation and interruption

The plan reimburses eligible costs up to the policy limits when your trip is delayed, cut short or cancelled for covered reasons.

Personal accident and emergency assistance

The plan provides personal accident cover for death or permanent total disability and gives you access to 24x7 emergency assistance, delivered by Europ Assistance, while you are in Thailand.

What is not covered (key exclusions)

Travel insurance for Thailand excludes a defined list of situations, and the two that catch Thailand travellers most often are rented two-wheelers and pre-existing conditions. Read the policy wording for the full list before you buy.

Adventure-sports and scooter-riding caveats

Adventure and hazardous sports are covered under the Zurich Kotak Smart Travel plan when you take part with professional supervision and follow the recommended safety measures; unlicensed, solo or reckless activity is excluded, and an optional Adventure Sports add-on is available for wider protection. Renting a scooter is a different matter and is the single biggest claim trap in Thailand. As a general market reality, many travel policies restrict or exclude rented two-wheelers, and where they are covered a valid licence and a helmet at the time of the accident are usually conditions, or the claim is denied. Typical Thai rental scooters are small-displacement bikes, so before you rent and ride, check the two-wheeler terms in your Zurich Kotak policy wording.

Pre-existing conditions

Pre-existing medical conditions are generally excluded, but a declared pre-existing condition is covered in a life-threatening emergency up to 10% of the sum insured or USD/EUR 10,000, whichever is lower, and an optional pre-existing-disease add-on is available. See our article on travel insurance and pre-existing conditions for how this generally works.

How much cover (sum insured) do you need for Thailand

For Thailand, choose a sum insured that comfortably clears the cost of a serious private-hospital admission, because that is the realistic worst case; that single factor is what separates the best travel insurance for Thailand from cover priced only for a routine clinic visit. A single motorbike injury can produce a very large hospital bill, so cover that only matches a routine GP visit is not enough.

Guidance by trip length and typical Thailand medical costs

The Zurich Kotak Smart Travel plan offers two tiers for the Asia geography that covers Thailand: Excel, with a sum insured up to USD 100,000, and Prime, up to USD 500,000. As a reference point, Thailand's General Insurance Association sets the minimum health cover for long-stay O-A visa applicants at USD 100,000 (about THB 3 million) including COVID cover; that is context for a longer or higher-risk stay, not a tourist requirement (Thai General Insurance Association). For a short leisure trip the Excel tier usually clears a serious admission, while a longer or higher-risk trip is better matched to Prime. Premiums move with trip length, age and the sum insured you pick; see how travel insurance cost is calculated.

Thailand entry and visa basics for Indians

Thailand's entry rules for Indians changed twice in 2026 and are mid-transition, so verify your status before you fly. India was upgraded to the 60-day visa-exemption list in February 2026, and on 2026-05-19 Thailand's Cabinet approved ending that scheme, with India specifically reverting to a 15-day Visa on Arrival (fee 2,000 THB, funds-on-entry requirement, non-extendable, tourism only) (The Thaiger; Wego). The VOA fee of 2,000 THB works out to roughly ₹4,800, the stay is capped at 15 days, and it is issued at 42 designated immigration checkpoints (Wego).

A few fixed points hold across both regimes:

·       TDAC: the Thailand Digital Arrival Card is mandatory for all foreign arrivals, is free, and must be completed online at tdac.immigration.go.th within 72 hours before arrival; it has been mandatory since 2025-05-01 (The Thaiger). It is an arrival card, not a visa.

·       Passport and funds: your passport must be valid for 6 months from arrival, and proof of funds has historically meant 10,000 THB per person or 20,000 THB per family under the exemption (USD 750 is cited under the incoming VOA framework) (Goodreturns).

·       Longer stays: trips beyond the VOA limit need a tourist visa via Thailand's official e-Visa portal (60 days, extendable to 90) at thaievisa.go.th (The Thaiger).

Travel insurance for a Thailand visa is not a documented entry condition under either regime as of 2026-06-30, but it is strongly recommended for the medical reasons above. This is a fast-moving rule, so confirm the current status with Thai immigration or the Royal Thai Embassy before booking.

Why choose Zurich Kotak for your Thailand travel insurance

What really matters on a Thailand trip is who stands behind the policy when you are in a hospital far from home. Zurich Kotak General Insurance is part of the Zurich Insurance Group, which serves customers in more than 200 countries and territories (Zurich) and a leading travel insurer worldwide (Zurich). That global footprint sits behind your policy as 24x7 emergency assistance, delivered in India through Europ Assistance, while Zurich Kotak, an IRDAI-registered Indian general insurer, handles your cover and claims under Indian regulation. For a Thailand trip that means you have a global assistance network behind you if a scooter accident or a sudden illness lands you in a private hospital that expects payment before you are discharged.

How to buy / get a quote

Buying travel insurance for Thailand from India with Zurich Kotak starts with the "Secure your Trip" flow and takes three steps:

1.      Enter your destination, trip duration and the travellers to be covered with their ages.

2.      Choose your plan and sum insured, then add your KYC and member details.

3.      Pay, and your policy document downloads instantly.

How to claim

If you are hospitalised in Thailand, call the Zurich Kotak 24x7 travel assistance helpline on +91 22 6734 7863 first; claims are handled by Europ Assistance India on a cashless or reimbursement basis. For cashless treatment at a network hospital, intimate the claim within 24 hours of admission; for reimbursement, pay the hospital and submit your documents within 30 days of returning. Zurich Kotak's cover is supported by an overseas hospital network in the region, so cashless treatment may be available depending on the hospital. Travel Insurance - frequently asked questions

Of course, you may have more questions related to travel insurance, so scroll down and find your question answered!

No, Thailand does not currently mandate travel insurance as a universal entry condition for Indian tourists, though mandatory accident cover has been proposed and is still under discussion (Travel Noire). It is still strongly recommended given Thai private hospitals demand payment before discharge. For the full country-by-country view, see Is travel insurance mandatory for Thailand?

Yes, your entry route and your insurance are separate things. A visa on arrival, the visa exemption or an e-visa is your permission to enter Thailand; none of them pays for medical treatment, lost baggage or a cancelled trip, which is what a travel policy covers.

Take a sum insured that comfortably clears a serious private-hospital admission. The Zurich Kotak Smart Travel plan offers Excel up to USD 100,000 and Prime up to USD 500,000 for the Asia geography that covers Thailand. As a sense of scale, a single serious motorbike injury can run to a large hospital bill, so cover should be sized to that, not to a routine clinic visit.

Adventure and hazardous sports are covered under the Smart Travel plan when you take part with professional supervision and follow safety measures, with an optional Adventure Sports add-on for wider protection. Rented two-wheelers are a separate matter: as a general market reality, many travel policies restrict or exclude rented scooters and require a valid licence and a helmet for any claim, so check the two-wheeler terms in your policy wording.

Call the Zurich Kotak 24x7 assistance helpline on +91 22 6734 7863 first. Claims are managed by Europ Assistance India: for cashless treatment, intimate the claim within 24 hours of admission; otherwise pay the hospital and submit your documents within 30 days for reimbursement.
