Different types of car insurance policies

Know the diverse range of our insurance plans and find the perfect one that suits your driving needs

Comprehensive car insurance

Comprehensive Car Insurance Policy (Extensive Protection)

A comprehensive car insurance policy offers the highest level of coverage, providing financial protection against third-party liabilities and damages to the insured vehicle. In addition to road accidents, it covers losses caused by natural disasters, human-made incidents, fire, explosions, lightning, self-ignition, theft, and more. This policy ensures extensive financial security in various unforeseen circumstances.

Third party car insurance

Third-Party Car Insurance Policy (Mandatory Coverage)

In India, third-party car insurance policy is a legal requirement for all the motor vehicles. Also referred to as a liability-only car insurance policy, it is the most fundamental type of coverage available. This policy ensures that the insurer covers expenses related to bodily injuries, temporary or permanent disabilities, and fatalities of third parties resulting from an accident involving the insured vehicle. Additionally, it offers financial protection for damages caused to third-party property.

Own damage car insurance

Stand-Alone or Own Damage Cover Policy

A stand-alone or own damage (OD) car insurance policy  plan provides coverage exclusively for damages sustained by the insured's four-wheeler due to natural calamities or man-made events, calamities, fire, explosions, theft, or other unforeseen incidents. However, to avail themselves of standalone own-damage insurance, the insured must also have an active Third-Party Liability policy.

Comprehensive vs Third Party vs Own Damage Car Insurance Plan

See what makes our car insurance policies stand out!

A comprehensive car insurance plan provides an all-around coverage and covers the mandatory third-party liability.

imageCovers damages suffered by the car

If your car is damaged due to natural or man-made causes, the comprehensive car insurance plan covers for the loss suffered.

imageCoverage for theft

The comprehensive plan also covers theft of the car and pays the Insured Declared Value (IDV) against the same.

imagePersonal accident cover for the owner/driver

A personal accident cover is available for the owner or driver of the car with a sum insured of Rs.15 lakhs. The cover pays a benefit in the case of accidental death or permanent total disability due to an accident.

imageRange of add-ons

Add-ons are optional additional benefits that you can choose with the comprehensive cover by paying extra premium. Zurich Kotak General Insurance’s comprehensive car insurance policy allows a choice of multiple add-ons for an inclusive coverage.

imagePremium discounts

You can avail premium discounts for installing safety devices in your car, for being a member of an automobile association, for choosing a voluntary deductible etc. These discounts bring down the premium cost.

imageNo claim bonus

imageCashless claim settlements

Under comprehensive plans you can get cashless claim settlements on repairs if you take your car to a networked garage.

imageCoverage against third-party liabilities

If you incur any financial liability caused by your car, resulting in a bodily injury or property damage to a third party, such liabilities are covered by the third-party car insurance policy. If you face such liabilities, the policy compensates the third party on your behalf.

imageLow premiums

The premiums for third party car insurance plans are determined by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI). The premiums depend on the cubic capacity and segment of the car and are low.

imageMandatory requirement

The third-party car insurance policy is a mandatory requirement as specified under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. So, if you own a car, you have to buy the third-party coverage mandatorily.

imageLong-term coverage

For new cars, the third-party coverage is mandatory for a long-term period of three years. You don’t have to renew the policy every year.

imageHigh coverage

The amount under third-party policy decided by the motor tribunal. Whatever is the liability amount, the policy covers it.

imageOnline issuance

Under comprehensive plans you can get cashless claim settlements on repairs if you take your car to a networked garage

imageCoverage for own damages

The own damage insurance for car covers the damages suffered by the car. Such damages can be due to natural or man-made calamities. For instance, the own damage cover will pay for the repair costs if the car is damaged due to earthquake, flood, landslide, storm, fire, ignition, strike, riots, etc. Even if the car is totalled, the loss suffered is compensated.

imageCoverage against theft

If the car is stolen, you get compensated for the considerable financial loss that you suffer. You can use the compensation received to replace the lost car or pay off an existing car loan.

imageOptional add-ons

Different add-ons are available with own damage car insurance policies. Such add-ons are optional and help in increasing the scope of coverage at a minimal additional premium.

imageNo claim bonus

●      Compare Add-Ons Judiciously – Consider value-enhancing options like depreciation cover, roadside assistance, consumables cover, or engine protection before adding to the policy.

●      Check Claim Settlement Ratio (CSR) – Opt for insurers with a high CSR (ideally above 90%), ensuring smoother claim processing.

Yes, but you must inform the insurer and provide a sale agreement, RC transfer, and a transfer request.

a. New private cars must have a three-year third-party policy as mandated by Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI).

b. Comprehensive car insurance is renewed annually or for multiple years under a long-term plan.

Comprehensive car insurance is not compulsory. Only third-party insurance is a must have by law under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. However, it is recommended to have comprehensive insurance as it protects you against third-party liabilities and protects you against damage to your own vehicle as a result of accidents, theft, fire, natural disasters and more, affording you wider financial coverage and peace of mind.

A lapse in your car policy coverage occurs when you forget, or choose not, to renew your car insurance before it expires. When this happens, you no longer have insurance for your car , and you’re at risk legally when driving and its also likely to be a fine as well. In order to avoid a lapse, consider reminders for your renewal, taking a longer-term policy, or turning on auto-renewal on your insurer's website. In addition, by having continuous coverage, you continue to receive any No Claim Bonus benefits.

You can find your vehicle insurance policy number on your policy document and on your renewal notices. If you lost the document or renewal notices, check your insurer's website, customer portal, or call the helpline to retrieve it using the registered mobile number or email address. You may also find the number on various government portals like VAHAN, for a registered motor vehicle.

Yes, third-party car insurance is a requirement under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. As a prerequisite for obtaining valid registration for motor vehicles on public roads, third-party insurance compensates for death, injury, or damage to property caused by your vehicle to third parties.

Don’t choose based on low premiums alone. Look for:

●      Right IDV

●      Service quality

●      Claim settlement ratio

●      Go online and enter car details

●      Choose policy type and add-ons

●      Calculate premium

·       Vehicle Type & Age: Luxury and high-end cars have higher premiums.

·       Location: Metro cities have higher premiums due to accident risks.

·       No-Claim Bonus (NCB): Discounts are offered for claim-free years.

·       Add-ons Chosen: Extra covers like Zero Depreciation cover or Engine Protect increase costs.

·       Car Modifications: Performance enhancements or customizations can lead to higher premiums.

Add-on covers are typically only available with comprehensive policies or standalone own-damage policies. Third-party-only policies don’t cover your own vehicle’s damage, so add-ons like zero depreciation, engine protection, or roadside assistance can’t be added.  If you require wider coverage, consider switching to a comprehensive policy and then purchase add-ons.

Yes, buying car insurance online is secure as long as you are using the official website of a reputable insurer. Buying online has secure payment gateways, instant policy issuance, and you can easily see valid comparisons of plans! Always check the issuer's IRDAI registration before paying to make sure your policy is legally valid and enforceable.

A car insurance premium calculator estimates your policy cost based on details like vehicle make, model, age, location, IDV, and add-ons. By entering accurate information, you can compare premiums instantly, customise your four-wheeler insurance coverage, and find a plan that balances affordability and protection.

The car insurance price is a combination of several components, including the third-party premium, own-damage premium, and any add-ons you choose. The final price is determined by factors that help the insurer assess the risk of a claim.

Yes, the car insurance price is often higher for diesel cars. This is because diesel vehicles are generally more expensive to repair, and their spare parts can be costlier compared to petrol cars, which increases the insurer's risk.

You should not let your car insurance lapse and renew it immediately if expired. In case you renew it after expiry, the following outcomes may follow:

If you have earned any No Claim Bonus over the last few years of the policy period, you might lose the same.

After your insurance expires, your car is not insured and that may put you and your car at considerable financial and legal risk in case of any.

Having at least third-party car insurance is mandatory by law, so in case you are charged under the law for driving without valid car insurance, you will get fined or face legal implications.

The reimbursement claim process is an alternative to the cashless claim process. In this process, the policyholder pays for the repairs or damages caused due to accident.

·       Inform Zurich Kotak General Insurance immediately after an accident.

·       File a claim online or call customer support.

·       Submit documents like FIR copy (for major accidents), RC, and insurance policy.

·       The insurer will arrange for a surveyor to assess the damage.

·       Post-approval, you can either get a cashless repair or reimbursement.

A cashless claim means you don’t have to pay for repairs upfront. Instead, the insurer directly settles the bill with a network garage.

·       Duly filled Claim Form

·       Insurance Policy Copy

·       Vehicle Registration Certificate (RC)

·       Driving License of the policyholder

·       FIR Copy (for theft/major accidents)

·       Repair Invoice (for reimbursement claims)

·       Third-Party Claim: If your vehicle has caused damage to another vehicle/person.

·       Own Damage Claim: If your car is damaged due to an accident, fire, or natural disaster.

·       Total Loss Claim: If the vehicle is stolen or completely damaged beyond repair.

·       Cashless claims (at network garages) are processed within a few days.

·       Reimbursement claims may take 7-15 working days depending on document submission.

Yes, following are the few scenarios basis which your claims can be rejected:

·       Driving under influence of alcohol/drugs.

·       Policy lapse at the time of the accident.

·       Incorrect information provided in the claim form.

·       Using the car for commercial purposes when insured as a private vehicle.

The process to claim car insurance online is to notify your insurer ASAP, provide the details of your policy and incident, and then provide the required details. Once repairs have been completed, you can submit any documents required for cashless claims (in this case, the repairs will be made at a garage permitted by the insurer) or simply repair the vehicle wherever you want (reimbursement claim), and submit the claim with bills required for approval by the insurer. The insurer will confirm whether the costs are eligible for payment after verification as per the details in your policy.
