An Indian adult passport is issued for a maximum of ten years, and you can apply to have it re-issued at any point in that life. The Passport Seva portal’s own words are that you may apply for a re-issue “up to 10 years before the expiry”, which is the whole life of the booklet. The widely repeated idea that you must wait until the final year is not the rule (Passport Seva, validity FAQ, accessed 2026-08-27).
This guide is maintained by Zurich Kotak General Insurance, an IRDAI-registered general insurer in India and part of the Zurich Insurance Group.
How Zurich Kotak fits in: No policy can add validity to a passport that is running short, but Zurich Kotak covers what happens once you have boarded. Zurich Kotak’s Smart Travel plans cover emergency medical treatment abroad, medical evacuation, baggage loss or delay and loss of your passport while overseas, up to the limits of the plan you buy. Cover is bought per trip and issued online, so the sensible order is the re-issue first, then the tickets, then the policy.

How long an Indian passport is valid
Ten years is a ceiling, not a promise. The gazette says validity “shall not exceed ten years”.
Passport holder | Validity |
Adult, 18 and above | Generally 10 years |
Minor below 15 | 5 years, or until the child turns 18, whichever is earlier |
Minor aged 15 to 18 | A choice: a full 10-year passport at INR 2,500, or one valid until they turn 18 at INR 1,750 |
Sources: G.S.R. 516(E) dated 20 June 2026, Note 2 to Schedule IV, and the Passport Seva validity FAQ, accessed 2026-08-27. A minor aged 15 to 18 who takes the ten-year option has to produce proof of Non-ECR eligibility, or ECR status is applied.
When you can apply, which is earlier than you think
At any time while the passport is valid, and for three years after it expires, without fresh police verification.
Where you are | What applies |
Passport still valid, whether it expires next month or in eight years | Apply for a re-issue whenever you like. No fresh police verification, provided there is a clear police report on the previous passport and no adverse entry in the system |
Expired less than three years ago | Same position. No fresh police verification, on the same conditions |
Expired more than three years ago | Fresh police verification is initiated |

Almost every published guide to this subject says you may apply “up to one year before expiry”, and it is worth being clear about where that comes from, because the portal itself uses both framings. Its rules pages say ten years: you may apply for a re-issue “up to 10 years before the expiry”, and its list of services describes a re-issue as covering a passport whose “validity expired within 3 years or is due to expire within next 10 years”. Its traveller tips and its Documents Advisor, on the other hand, use a one-year window.
Read the ten-year statements as the rule and the one-year statements as advice. You are permitted to apply at any point in the passport’s life. The government advises you not to leave it late, which is sensible and is not the same thing as a restriction.
There is no late fee either: the statutory fee schedule has no such row, so an expired passport costs no more to replace. What changes after three years is the verification burden, not your eligibility.
It is a re-issue, not a renewal
India has no passport renewal service. Every case is an application for “Re-issue of Passport”, and you get a new booklet.
The word renewal survives in ordinary speech and on most websites, but it does not appear in the process. Whether your passport has expired, is about to, has run out of blank pages, or needs a change of particulars, you apply for a re-issue. Someone whose last passport was issued at 15 and who is now 25 applies for a re-issue, not a fresh passport, because they have held one before.
The step-by-step application, documents, fees and status tracking are set out in our passport renewal process guide. What this page settles is the timing.
The six-month rule belongs to your destination, not to India
No Indian law or rule requires six months of remaining validity to leave the country. The requirement is imposed by the countries you are travelling to, and the Government of India passes on the advice.
This distinction matters more than it sounds, because the number is not always six and some destinations impose a second condition that has nothing to do with expiry.
The Ministry of External Affairs puts it this way: “Many international travellers may not realise that having an unexpired passport is sometimes not enough to obtain Visas or to enter certain foreign countries.” The Passport Seva portal is equally clear about whose rule it is: “most of the foreign missions/embassies insist on the Passport validity of at least of six months to one year before they consider issuing visas.”
Destination | What it actually asks for |
Singapore | A minimum passport validity of six months for all travellers other than Singapore passport holders (Immigration and Checkpoints Authority, accessed 2026-08-27) |
Schengen area | An expiry date at least three months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area, and a date of issue less than ten years before the day you arrive (entry requirements for Spain, accessed 2026-08-27) |
The Schengen pair is the useful example. The figure is three months rather than six, so a page that tells you six is not wrong in a helpful direction, it is simply wrong. And the issue-date condition is one an expiry check never looks at: Schengen states ask when the passport was issued, not only when it runs out, so read both conditions rather than assuming the expiry date settles it.
Check the requirement for the specific country you are going to, on that country’s own immigration website, every time. Never assume the last trip’s rule applies to the next one.
So when should you actually apply?
If you have international travel in the next year, look at your passport today rather than at booking time.
Four triggers worth acting on:
1. Under a year of validity left, which is the point at which visa applications start being refused on validity grounds even though the passport is perfectly current.
2. Fewer than two to four blank pages, since a page shortage stops a visa being issued. Exhaustion of pages is its own ground for re-issue.
3. A visa application coming up. Missions look for six months to a year of validity beyond the trip, and some want a passport issued within the previous ten years.
4. Three years since expiry approaching. Cross that line and fresh police verification is added to the process.
Applying early costs nothing extra. The fee is the same whether you apply with eight years left or eight weeks, and you lose nothing but the unused time on the old booklet.
Planning a trip once the passport is sorted? The validity check and the cover are the same errand: both are the things you want settled before the tickets are paid for, not after. Get a travel insurance quote from Zurich Kotak.
What travel insurance does, and does not, do here
It does not fix a passport problem, and we are not going to suggest it does.
If an airline refuses to board you because your passport does not meet your destination’s validity rule, that is a documents failure. It is within your control, it is knowable weeks in advance, and it is not the kind of loss a travel policy is designed to reimburse. The fix is the passport, applied for early.
What a policy is for is the part of a trip you cannot plan away. Zurich Kotak’s retail travel product is Smart Travel, which on the Asia geography offers two tiers, Excel with a sum insured up to USD 100,000 and Prime up to USD 500,000, with a maximum entry age of 70. Alongside emergency medical treatment, it covers trip cancellation and trip delay for specified reasons, baggage loss and delay, and loss of passport abroad, each up to the limits of the plan you buy. Loss of a passport overseas is worth noting on a page like this one, because replacing a passport away from home is the version of this problem that money genuinely helps with.

Frequently asked questions
Can I renew my Indian passport before it expires? Yes, at any point during its validity. Passport Seva states that you can apply for a re-issue up to 10 years before the expiry, which covers the entire life of a ten-year passport. The common claim that you must wait until the final year is not the rule, although the government does advise applying well before time.
How long is an Indian passport valid? Ten years for adults, and the gazette wording is that validity shall not exceed ten years. A passport issued to a child under 15 is valid for five years or until the child turns 18, whichever is earlier. A minor aged 15 to 18 can choose between a full ten-year passport and one valid until they turn 18, at different fees.
Does India require six months of passport validity to travel abroad? No. No Indian law or rule imposes it. The requirement is set by the country you are travelling to, and the Government of India advises citizens about it. Singapore asks for six months, while the Schengen area asks for three months beyond your departure plus a passport issued within the previous ten years.
What happens if my passport expired more than three years ago? You still apply for a re-issue, and there is no penalty. The difference is that fresh police verification is initiated where a passport has been expired for more than three years, which adds time to the process.
Is renewal the same as re-issue in India? There is no renewal service. Every case is an application for re-issue of the passport, whether the passport has expired, is about to expire, has run out of blank pages or needs a change of particulars. A fresh booklet is issued in each case.
When should I apply if I have a trip planned? Apply as soon as you have less than a year of validity left, or fewer than two to four blank pages. Foreign missions commonly want six months to a year of validity beyond your travel dates before they will issue a visa, so a passport that looks current can still hold up an application.
