Japan Visa Processing Time: How Many Days It Takes from India

Japan’s missions in India take at least five working days; Mumbai’s centres publish 10 to 12. When to apply, what adds days, what to do if you fly soon.

Key Takeaways

  • Japan’s missions in India process a complete visa application in at least five working days, counted from the day after they receive it, and often longer.

  • The Mumbai jurisdiction’s centres publish 10 processing days for Mumbai and 12 for Pune, Ahmedabad and Goa, and applications open about three months before travel.

  • No express or priority service exists for a Japanese visa, and an application sent to Tokyo for further examination can take more than a month.

Japan visa processing time is at least five working days after the Embassy or consulate receives a complete application, and it can take longer; apply two to three weeks ahead, and no earlier than about three months before you travel (MOFA, Visa Processing Time, mofa.go.jp , accessed 2026-09-17). The Mumbai jurisdiction publishes 10 to 12 days depending on the centre, and the Embassy of Japan in India says times “can vary significantly”.

Japan visa processing time: what each official source says

MOFA and the Japanese missions in India state five working days as the usual minimum; the application centres’ own figures run from three to twelve days, with the Mumbai jurisdiction’s 10 to 12 the longest. All were read on 2026-09-17:

Stated time

MOFA, Visa Processing Time

“5 working days from the day following the date of receipt of the application”, if there is no problem; “more than a month” if sent to Tokyo

MOFA, single-entry visa checklist (PDF)

“approximately one week”

JAPAN eVISA, FAQ

“normally takes 5 working days” after a complete application; may take “more than a month”

Embassy of Japan, New Delhi

Times “can vary significantly”; processing “cannot be expedited or prioritized according to the schedule of applicants”

Consulate-General, Mumbai

“generally takes minimum 5 working days following the date of receipt of application”

Consulate-General, Chennai

“Generally 5 working days once visa application is accepted at VFS” in Chennai; from other cities it “may take longer”

Consulate-General, Bengaluru

“at least 5 working days”, counted from the day after submission

Consulate-General, Kolkata

“minimum 5 working days from the day of submission”, “not guaranteed and may take longer”

VFS, New Delhi

Keep “a minimum gap of seven to ten working days” between applying and travel

VFS, Mumbai

Timeline given by the Mumbai Consulate: 10 processing days at Mumbai; 12 at Pune, Ahmedabad and Goa

VFS, Chennai

Minimum 3 working days from the day the application reaches the Consulate

VFS, Bengaluru

Minimum 6 working days

VFS, Kolkata

Minimum 5 working days, and at least 5 more after any additional documents

Travelling to Japan? Get covered before you fly. Travel insurance for Japan will not make a visa arrive sooner, but it pays towards a medical bill in Japan, which a visa never will.

Where the sources disagree

The main conflict is the missions’ five-day minimum against the Mumbai jurisdiction’s 10 to 12 days; plan on the longer figure for your centre. The Mumbai Consulate’s page says a minimum of five working days, while VFS’s Mumbai page attributes its 10 and 12 days to that same Consulate. VFS Chennai (three days) and VFS Bengaluru (six) also differ from their consulates’ five. No source promises a fixed date, and none states a range of “5 to 7 working days”.

How to count the working days

Start counting on the day after the mission receives your application, skip weekends and holidays, and treat the fifth working day as the earliest to expect a decision. The Bengaluru Consulate’s example: “If you apply on a Monday, it will be issued on the following Monday.”

Application received on

Fifth working day, with no holidays

Monday

The following Monday

Wednesday

The following Wednesday

Friday

The following Friday

Three things push it later:

·       The handover. MOFA and the Mumbai Consulate count from receipt of the application, and VFS Chennai from when it reaches the Consulate, so a file lodged in another city can take longer: the Chennai Consulate says so, and VFS Mumbai gives Pune, Ahmedabad and Goa two more days.

·       Holidays. The processing notes do not say which closure days apply, so allow for public holidays in both India and Japan, and check whether your mission is closed during your window.

·       The return leg. The decision goes back to the centre, VFS emails you when it arrives, and a courier adds its own time.

How early to apply for a Japan visa

Apply no earlier than about three months before travel and no later than two to three weeks before it, leaning to three weeks if your centre publishes a longer timeline.

What it says

Earliest

“Applications can be accepted from 3 months prior to the travel date.”

Embassy of Japan in India; JAPAN eVISA FAQ

Earliest, by centre

“Within 90 days” (New Delhi); 89 days (Chennai, Kolkata)

VFS centre pages

Why not earlier

A single-entry visa is valid for three months and cannot be extended

MOFA, Validity of a Visa

Latest

Seven to ten working days minimum (New Delhi); plan on two to three weeks

VFS New Delhi; the timelines above

MOFA does not require flights or hotels to be booked or paid for when you apply, though the Mumbai centre’s checklist asks for confirmed bookings; follow your own centre’s list, and see our guide to the Japan tourist visa for Indians for the documents.

·       A Delhi couple flying on 2026-11-20 can apply from about 2026-08-20, and should submit by 2026-11-06 at the latest, or by 2026-10-30 for three weeks’ margin.

·       A Pune family flying on 2027-03-26 can apply from about 2026-12-26. The Pune centre’s published figure alone is 12 processing days, so they should submit by about 2027-03-05, earlier if they can.

What adds days to a Japan visa application

A referral to Tokyo, a request for more documents, a rush of applications and an incomplete file are the delays the official sources name.

A problem with the application

Sent to MOFA in Tokyo; “may take more than a month”

MOFA, Visa Processing Time

Many applications at once

Chennai Consulate; VFS Mumbai

Errors or omissions, too little passport validity or too few pages, or applying outside your place of residence

MOFA, Visa FAQ

The last row costs more than days, because the file has to start again. Match your file to your centre’s checklist and apply at the centre for the state you live in; see how to apply for a Japan eVISA .

Is there express or urgent Japan visa processing?

No. Neither MOFA nor the Japanese missions in India offer an express or priority service. The Embassy says processing “cannot be expedited or prioritized according to the schedule of applicants”, and the JAPAN eVISA FAQ says the same. VFS sells optional services, but states they have “no bearing on expediting your visa process or favourable decision-making”. The Embassy also warns that it never asks for payment by phone or email to expedite a visa.

If your trip is close

If you fly within three weeks, submit a complete file at the right centre now, book nothing non-refundable, and track the application rather than filing a second one.

·       There is no fallback at the airport. Japan has no visa on arrival for Indian passport holders; MOFA: “Visas cannot be obtained at the port of entry in Japan.”

·       Do not apply twice. An application pending at another mission is a MOFA ground for not accepting a new one.

·       Track it with your VFS reference number and date of birth; see Japan visa status check .

·       If the date moves, check the validity. A single-entry visa cannot be extended, so a trip that moves beyond its three months needs a new application, and an issued eVISA’s fee is not refunded if you do not travel (JAPAN eVISA FAQ).

Where travel insurance fits

Travel insurance is not a requirement for a Japanese visa or for entry, but Japan’s Foreign Ministry calls it highly recommended (MOFA, VISA, accessed 2026-09-17). It has no effect on processing time or the decision. Japan’s consulates in India warn that medical expenses can be very high, and since 2026-04-01 an unpaid medical bill of JPY 10,000 or more (about INR 6,170 at 1 JPY = INR 0.617 on 2026-09-17) can be reported to Japan’s immigration agency and lead to strict screening on a later visit (MHLW notice, accessed 2026-09-17).

Zurich Kotak’s Smart Travel plans cover Japan under the Asia geography, with Excel offering sum insured up to USD 100,000 and Prime up to USD 500,000. The Asia plans accept travellers up to age 70, with no Senior Citizen plan on this geography; travellers aged 71 or over can see travel insurance for senior citizens . Cover centres on emergency medical treatment, with baggage, trip delay, trip cancellation, passport loss and medical evacuation covered up to plan limits. Claims run through Europ Assistance India, and in Japan most are settled on reimbursement. See travel insurance for Japan .

FAQs

Q: How many days does it take to get a Japan visa from India? A: At least five working days after the Embassy or consulate receives a complete application, and often longer. The Mumbai jurisdiction’s centres publish 10 processing days for Mumbai and 12 for Pune, Ahmedabad and Goa. Allow two to three weeks.

Q: How early can I apply for a Japan tourist visa? A: About three months before travel. The Embassy of Japan in India accepts applications from three months before the travel date, and the Chennai and Kolkata centres give 89 days.

Q: Can I get a Japan visa urgently? A: No. The Embassy says visa processing cannot be expedited or prioritised according to applicants’ schedules, and VFS states that its optional services have no bearing on expediting the visa process.

Q: Are weekends counted in Japan visa processing time? A: No. The missions count working days, starting the day after they receive the application. The Bengaluru Consulate’s example is that an application made on a Monday is issued on the following Monday.

Q: Why is my Japan visa taking longer than five working days? A: Five working days is a minimum. MOFA says an application with a problem is sent to Tokyo and may take more than a month, and a request for additional documents also adds time. Track it on VFS, and contact VFS once the published time has passed.

Q: Is the Japan eVISA processed faster than a paper visa? A: Not according to the official sources. The JAPAN eVISA FAQ gives five working days after a complete application is received, the same minimum the Japanese missions in India state.
