India to Japan Flight Time: Non-Stop Routes, Time Difference and Arriving in Tokyo

India to Japan flight time: about 7 to 9 hours non-stop from Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru to Tokyo, the 3.5-hour time gap, and Narita versus Haneda.

Key Takeaways

  • Non-stop flights to Tokyo leave from Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru and take roughly 7 to 9 hours, while flights back to India take about 9 hours to 10 hours 20 minutes.

  • Japan is 3 hours 30 minutes ahead of India all year, so JAL’s flight leaving Delhi at 04:35 lands at Narita at 15:00 Japan time, about 7 hours later.

  • Chennai has no non-stop flight to Japan: ANA lists its Chennai to Narita route as suspended until 27 March 2027.

The India to Japan flight time is roughly 7 to 9 hours non-stop, and the non-stops all land in Tokyo: about 7 hours from Delhi to Narita on JAL, about 8 hours 15 minutes to 8 hours 35 minutes from Mumbai on ANA and Air India, and about 8 hours 40 minutes from Bengaluru to Narita on JAL (worked out from published schedules by JAL, Air India and, for ANA, Traicy Global, accessed 2026-09-17). Flights back to India take longer, about 9 hours to 10 hours 20 minutes.

Delhi to Tokyo flight time

JAL’s non-stop from Delhi to Narita takes about 7 hours: JL740 is scheduled to leave Delhi at 04:35 and land at 15:00 Japan time, and JL749 leaves Narita at 20:15 and reaches Delhi at 03:00 the next day. Delhi also has non-stops to Haneda on JAL, Air India and ANA; check Haneda flight times on the operating airline’s timetable.

Mumbai to Tokyo flight time

From Mumbai, ANA flies to Narita in about 8 hours 15 minutes and Air India flies to Haneda in about 8 hours 35 minutes. Air India’s AI356 is scheduled to leave Mumbai at 16:50 and reach Haneda at 04:55 the next morning, and AI355 returns in about 9 hours. ANA’s NH830 was reported as leaving Mumbai at 20:00 and reaching Narita at 07:45; its return, NH829, takes about 10 hours 20 minutes.

Bengaluru to Tokyo flight time

JAL’s non-stop from Bengaluru to Narita takes about 8 hours 40 minutes: JL754 is scheduled to leave at 02:45 and land at 14:55, and JL753 returns in about 9 hours 20 minutes. JAL’s Bengaluru page still describes the route as launching, so confirm the current timetable with JAL before you book.

From Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and other cities

We found no non-stop flight to Japan from any other Indian city, so travellers from Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Kochi, Ahmedabad and elsewhere connect. ANA lists its Chennai to Narita route as suspended from 2026-03-29 to 2027-03-27. The usual options:

·       A domestic flight to Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru, then one of the non-stops above.

·       A one-stop flight through a hub elsewhere in Asia, such as Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Hong Kong.

Book one ticket where you can: on a single booking the airline is generally responsible for rebooking you if the first flight runs late, while on separate tickets a missed connection is your problem. A hub in another country has its own transit rules, which a Japanese visa does not cover.

For Osaka, Sapporo or Fukuoka, connect in Tokyo or through a hub: we found no non-stop from India to any Japanese airport except Narita and Haneda. Continue by domestic flight, ideally on the same ticket, or by train.

Travelling to Japan? Get covered before you fly. Travel insurance for Japan is not an entry requirement, but on a long-haul trip with connections, a delayed departure or a late bag is easier to absorb with cover in place.

Japan is 3 hours 30 minutes ahead of India

Japan Standard Time is UTC+9 with no daylight saving, and India is UTC+5:30, so Japan is 3 hours 30 minutes ahead of India all year (Wikipedia, Japan Standard Time, accessed 2026-09-17). That gap distorts how long a flight looks on a ticket.

·       Going out, the clock adds 3 hours 30 minutes. JAL’s Delhi flight leaves at 04:35 and lands at 15:00: the clock shows 10 hours 25 minutes for about 7 hours in the air.

·       Coming back, the clock takes it away. JAL’s Narita flight leaves at 20:15 and lands in Delhi at 03:00 the next day: the clock shows 6 hours 45 minutes for about 10 hours 15 minutes in the air.

·       Return flights really are longer. Every route in the table is scheduled longer westbound, and winds are one reason: “Aircraft flight time can be dramatically affected by either flying with the flow or against it” (Wikipedia, Jet stream, accessed 2026-09-17).

Jet lag after the flight

Flying east to Japan, expect the 3 hour 30 minute shift to take a few days to settle: the CDC puts adaptation after eastward travel at about 1 hour a day (CDC Yellow Book, Jet lag disorder, last updated 2025-04-23, accessed 2026-09-17).

·       Morning light helps. The CDC says bright morning light helps the body clock shift earlier, the direction a trip east needs.

·       On a short trip, stay on home hours, the CDC suggests, where adapting would be limited.

·       Pick your arrival. From Mumbai, Air India and ANA land early in the morning, hours before a typical hotel check-in; JAL’s Narita flights from Delhi and Bengaluru land mid-afternoon but leave India before dawn.

Narita or Haneda: why the airport matters

Haneda is closer to most of central Tokyo: Haneda Airport lists Shinagawa about 15 minutes and Tokyo Station about 30 minutes away by train, while Keisei calls its Skyliner from Narita a “40-minute ride” to downtown Tokyo (Haneda Airport; Keisei, both accessed 2026-09-17).

·       Your hotel’s district matters. The Skyliner runs to Nippori and Ueno, which Haneda also puts about 40 minutes away, so for north-east Tokyo the two airports are close to even.

·       Changing airports means entering Japan. Narita and Haneda are separate airports, about 1 hour 45 minutes apart by train on Haneda’s own table, so a connection between them means clearing immigration and customs first, on a valid visa.

·       Narita’s airside closes overnight. Narita says aircraft operate only between 06:00 and midnight, and “Passengers transiting overnight must complete arrival immigration and customs procedures. Some passengers may need a visa at that time.” (Narita Airport, accessed 2026-09-17)

Before you land: Visit Japan Web

Visit Japan Web is an optional, free Digital Agency service: register your details before you fly and you get one QR code for immigration and customs on arrival. Japan’s Immigration Services Agency and Japan Customs both recommend it, and both still accept paper forms (Digital Agency; Immigration Services Agency; Japan Customs, accessed 2026-09-17). There is no fixed deadline, so register at home; saved codes work offline if you stay logged in. The service is at www.vjw.digital.go.jp , with information at services.digital.go.jp , and it is not a visa. Our Visit Japan Web guide walks through each step.

The visa comes before the booking

Indian passport holders need a Japanese visa before they fly: there is no visa on arrival, and applications from India go in through the Japan Visa Application Centre (VFS Global) for your state, with single-entry tourist visas issued electronically. See our guide to the Japan visa for Indians and check the Embassy of Japan in India’s website ( in.emb-japan.go.jp ) before you book.

Baggage and what not to pack

Your baggage allowance depends on your airline and fare, so check it in your booking; what Japan controls is what is inside your bags.

·       Food: JNTO says “Bringing meat, meat products, plants and plant products into Japan is strictly prohibited,” with fines of up to JPY 3 million (about INR 18,51,000 at 1 JPY = INR 0.617 on 2026-09-17) or up to 3 years’ imprisonment (JNTO, Customs and Duty, accessed 2026-09-17). Leave fruit, vegetables and meat snacks at home, and check with Japan’s Animal Quarantine Service and Plant Protection Station before packing any other food.

·       Medicines: Japan’s health ministry allows up to one month’s supply of prescription medicine without paperwork; more needs an Import Confirmation certificate before you travel, and some ingredients need an advance permit (MHLW, accessed 2026-09-17).

·       Cash: declare cash or other means of payment worth more than JPY 1 million (about INR 6,17,000) (Japan Customs, accessed 2026-09-17).

·       Delayed bags: report a missing bag at the airline’s desk before leaving the baggage hall, and keep the report.

·       Leaving Japan: airlines collect Japan’s International Tourist Tax of JPY 3,000 (about INR 1,851) per departure; children under 2 are not charged (National Tax Agency, accessed 2026-09-17).

Planning the rest of the trip

Fares and the season shape a Japan plan more than flight time. See Japan trip cost from India for costs, and the best time to visit Japan for the weather in your month.

Where travel insurance fits

Travel insurance is not required to enter Japan, but Japan’s Foreign Ministry says: “It is highly recommended to purchase international travel medical insurance for your trip to Japan.” (MOFA, VISA, accessed 2026-09-17). Since 2026-04-01, an unpaid medical bill of JPY 10,000 or more (about INR 6,170) can be reported to Japan’s immigration agency and lead to strict screening on a later visit (MHLW notice, 2026-02-04, accessed 2026-09-17).

Zurich Kotak’s Smart Travel plans cover Japan under the Asia geography: Excel, with sum insured up to USD 100,000, and Prime, up to USD 500,000. Alongside emergency medical treatment, they cover trip delay, trip cancellation, and baggage loss and delay up to plan limits. The Asia plans accept travellers up to age 70 and there is no Senior Citizen plan on this geography; travellers aged 71 or over can read about travel insurance for senior citizens . In Japan, plan on paying the hospital and claiming reimbursement; claims are handled by Europ Assistance India and settled within 15 days of complete documents.
