The Japan visa line

An Indian national pays INR 1,300 per applicant for a Japanese tourist visa: a visa fee of INR 500 plus the application centre’s INR 800 service charge, with courier return of the passport an optional INR 550 (Embassy of Japan in India, Visa, accessed 2026-09-17). Indian passport holders need a Japanese visa before they fly: there is no visa on arrival, and applications from India go in through the Japan Visa Application Centre (VFS Global) for your state, with single-entry tourist visas issued electronically. See our guide to the Japan visa for Indians and check the Embassy of Japan in India’s website ( in.emb-japan.go.jp ) before you book.

Japan’s standard fee of about JPY 15,000 does not apply to Indian nationals applying in India; see Japan visa fees for Indians .

Hotels in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka

A business hotel room costs about JPY 10,000 to 17,000 a night in Tokyo and JPY 7,000 to 15,000 in Kyoto or Osaka, and mid-range rooms run JPY 13,000 to 35,000. For scale, Tokyo’s average daily hotel rate was JPY 33,168 in May 2026 (about INR 20,465), up 12.8% on a year earlier, against JPY 20,372 in Osaka (STR data reported by Nikkei, via Seoul Economic Daily, 2026-07-02).

Kyoto adds a lodging tax per person, per night, from JPY 200 to JPY 10,000 by room charge: from 2026-03-01, JPY 400 on JPY 6,000 to 20,000 and JPY 1,000 on JPY 20,000 to 50,000 (Kyoto City, in Japanese, accessed 2026-09-17).

Bullet trains, and whether the Japan Rail Pass pays

On a Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and back loop, two reserved Nozomi tickets cost JPY 28,490 (about INR 17,578), well below the JPY 50,000 (about INR 30,850) of a 7-day Japan Rail Pass. Booked on smartEX, JR Central’s online service, a Nozomi reserved seat costs JPY 13,970 from Tokyo to Kyoto and JPY 14,520 from Shin-Osaka to Tokyo in the normal season (smartEX fare table, PDF, in Japanese, accessed 2026-09-17). JR Central adds JPY 200 in busy periods and JPY 400 in the busiest, and takes JPY 200 off in quiet ones (JR Central, in Japanese).

Travelling to Japan? Get covered before you fly. Travel insurance for Japan is the only line in this budget that can pay you back when a hospital visit or a listed trip disruption upsets the plan.

Getting around the cities

A Tokyo Metro single ticket costs JPY 180 to 330 (about INR 111 to 204) by distance, with children paying about half (Tokyo Metro, accessed 2026-09-17). Four to six rides a day typically comes to about JPY 1,000 to 1,500. From Narita, Keisei’s Skyliner to Ueno costs JPY 2,470 and the slower Access Express JPY 1,240 (Keisei, Skyliner and Access Express fares, accessed 2026-09-17).

Food

Food runs about JPY 3,500 to 5,000 a day at convenience stores and noodle or rice-bowl chains, JPY 6,000 to 9,000 with sit-down meals, and JPY 10,000 or more with good dinners. A bowl of ramen is usually under JPY 1,200. Vegetarians should budget high: even stocks and sauces usually have meat ingredients (JNTO, accessed 2026-09-17).

Attractions at official prices

Many of Japan’s best-known sights cost JPY 500 to 1,300, and Meiji Jingu, Tokyo’s best-known shrine, charges nothing.

Mobile data

A tourist eSIM with unlimited data costs roughly INR 2,500 to 3,300 for 7 to 10 days; two budget travellers can share one plan as a hotspot.

The departure tax

Japan charges an International Tourist Tax of JPY 3,000 (about INR 1,851) per departure from 2026-07-01, and children under 2 are not charged (National Tax Agency Q&A, PDF; JNTO, accessed 2026-09-17). Airlines collect it, so check your fare breakdown before counting it twice.

Tax-free shopping, in one line

Tax-free shopping needs a spend of at least JPY 5,000 (excluding tax) per store per day: for purchases up to 2026-10-31, eligible visitors pay no consumption tax at the till, and for purchases from 2026-11-01, you pay it and get it refunded after customs confirms at departure that the goods are leaving Japan (Japan Tourism Agency, accessed 2026-09-17).

Travel insurance

Travel insurance is not a requirement for a Japanese visa or for entry, but Japan’s Foreign Ministry says “It is highly recommended to purchase international travel medical insurance for your trip to Japan” (MOFA, accessed 2026-09-17). Since 2026-04-01, an unpaid hospital bill of JPY 10,000 (about INR 6,170) or more can be reported to Japan’s immigration agency and lead to strict screening on a later visit (MHLW, PDF, in Japanese).

The premium depends on age, trip length and plan; see what drives travel insurance cost . Zurich Kotak’s Smart Travel policy covers Japan under its Asia plans: Excel, with a sum insured of up to USD 100,000, and Prime, up to USD 500,000. The Asia plans accept travellers up to age 70, with no Senior Citizen plan on this geography; travellers aged 71 or over can read about travel insurance for senior citizens .

Emergency medical treatment is the core of the cover, with baggage, trip delay, trip cancellation, passport loss and medical evacuation covered up to plan limits. In Japan most claims run on reimbursement, so keep itemised bills. Claims go through Europ Assistance India and are settled within 15 days of complete documents. See travel insurance for Japan once your dates are fixed.

What a family of four pays

Two adults and two children aged 6 to 11 should budget about INR 5,94,000 to 8,38,000 for the same 7 nights at mid-range, or INR 1,48,600 to 2,09,500 a head.

Children pay about half on JR trains and Tokyo Metro, and Osaka Castle admits junior high students and younger free, but flights and rooms do not shrink. A family travel insurance floater covers up to two adults and three dependent children under one shared sum insured.

How to spend less in Japan

Your dates, your Kansai base and skipping the rail pass on a simple loop save the most.

·       Avoid the peaks. Cherry blossom season, Golden Week and the autumn leaf weeks push up flights and rooms together; January and February are usually cheapest for rooms.

·       Buy point-to-point bullet train tickets for Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka rather than a 7-day pass.

·       Sleep in Osaka. Rooms usually cost less than in Kyoto, as the hotel table above shows.

·       Pay only the visa fee and the service charge. The Embassy says: “All you have to pay for visa is the visa fee and the service charge mentioned on this page.”
