When your passport status reads “Dispatched”, the booklet has left the Passport Office and is travelling to you by India Post Speed Post, addressed to the present address on your application form. The Ministry of External Affairs commits to a timeline for dispatch, but publishes none for the delivery leg that follows, so the consignment number India Post issues is the only thing that will tell you where your passport actually is right now (Postal Dispatch and Tracking FAQ, Passport Seva, accessed 2026-08-27).

Why this page will not tell you “X days after dispatch”
Nobody can give you an honest number of days, because no current government source publishes one for the delivery leg.
Dispatch is where the Ministry’s commitment ends. After that the passport is an India Post Speed Post consignment like any other, and the timeline belongs to the postal network. We checked India Post’s own site for a current, citable Speed Post delivery standard and could not retrieve one, so this page prints no figure.
What actually moves the number for your consignment: the distance from the issuing Passport Office to your delivery post office, how precisely your address was written on the form, whether somebody is home when the postman calls (a failed attempt costs a full cycle), and public holidays or local disruption on the route.
Your consignment’s own scan history predicts arrival far better than any average, because it tells you where your specific article is.
The two official places to check, and nowhere else
Application status lives on Passport Seva. Consignment status lives on India Post. They are separate systems and neither shows the other’s information.

Type both domains rather than following a search advert: passportindia.gov.in/psp and indiapost.gov.in . The tracker wants your File Number, printed at the top right of the Acknowledgement Letter handed to you at the Passport Seva Kendra exit counter, not the reference you received on submitting the form online. What happens between “granted” and your doorstep
The Ministry does not publish a list of Passport Seva status messages anywhere. The wording below is as applicants report seeing it; the meanings are taken from Passport Seva’s own FAQs and instruction material.

“Action for passport printing is initiated”: how long from there?
Not published either, and for the same reason. What is published is the sequence: lamination, then signing, then quality check, then dispatch.
The one official number here is the Citizen’s Charter service standard, and its exclusions have to be read alongside it. The Charter (July 2026) promises up to 30 working days for a fresh ordinary passport and up to 7 working days for a re-issue where police verification is not required, and states in the same document that all timelines exclude the police verification period and run only from the date of receipt of complete documentation (Citizen’s Charter, Ministry of External Affairs, July 2026, accessed 2026-08-27). By the time printing has started, most of that window is behind you.
“Post quality check” in a passport application
Quality check is the third of the four steps named in the printing message, and there is nothing for you to do at that stage.
The booklet has been laminated and signed, and is being checked before it goes to India Post. “Post quality check” means that check is done. It is a production step inside the Passport Office, not a request for anything from you.
How the passport is actually sent
By Speed Post, to the present address on your application form, and you cannot collect it in person.
The Postal Dispatch and Tracking FAQ is blunt about collection: “No, collection of Passport is not allowed.” There is no counter to go to and no way to have it held.
If you moved house while the application was in process, the passport still goes to the address on the form. The FAQ offers no self-service route to change it and tells you to contact the Passport Office. Do that before dispatch if you can, because afterwards it becomes an undelivered article and a re-dispatch application.
Getting your consignment number
It reaches you by SMS or e-mail when the passport is dispatched. No screen on the Passport Seva portal displays it.
The consignment number is not among the fields the status tracker returns, so if the SMS did not arrive, the route to it is the Passport Office rather than India Post. India Post cannot look up a consignment by your name or file number.
We are deliberately not printing a specimen number. No India Post page we could reach states the format, and India Post’s own tracking field gives no format hint, so comparing yours against a pattern somebody invented will only worry you. It is simply the tracking number India Post issued for the article, and it is in the message you were sent.
Tracking it with India Post
Five steps, and you need the consignment number before you start.
1. Go to indiapost.gov.in , typing the address rather than following a search result.
2. Find Track ‘N’ Trace on the homepage. It is India Post’s own tracking tool.
3. Choose the Consignment ID tab. The other tabs are for Money Order, Complaint ID and Article Number.
4. Enter your consignment number and complete the captcha.
5. Read the scan history. Each line is a physical handling event at a named office.
Go in through the homepage rather than bookmarking a deep link. India Post’s older tracking URLs now return 404 and there is no stable direct address for the tracking screen.
When it does not arrive
A status of dispatched or delivered with nothing in your hands is a known situation with a defined route, and it starts with India Post rather than with the Passport Office.

Who to contact, in what order
India Post owns the parcel, the Passport Office owns the file. Ask the right one and you get an answer on the first attempt.
1. India Post, for anything about the parcel: the nearest or relevant Speed Post centre, based on the last scan.
2. Your Regional Passport Office, for a missing consignment number, an article returned to sender, a re-dispatch, or a wrong address on the file.
3. The National Call Centre, 1800-258-1800, toll free and 24x7, with your File Number and Date of Birth ready. It can register a grievance and issue a Service Request Number you can track. It cannot take a lost-passport complaint.
4. A written grievance, via passportindia.gov.in/psp/Grievance , CPGRAMS at pgportal.gov.in , or the Public Grievance Cell of the CPV Division at passport.pg@mea.gov.in . Quote your file number, name and date of birth, or it cannot be actioned.

Most of the wasted effort at this stage comes from asking the wrong system for information it does not hold.

Losing a passport at home means a re-application; losing it abroad is an emergency, and loss of passport is one of the benefits a travel policy responds to, up to plan limits.
