The newborn baby and the mother require special care to ensure good health. Maternity care involves good nutrition, medical intervention, comfort, and postpartum care. Maternal anaemia and child malnutrition are the main contributors to poor health in India. To address this matter of concern, the Government of India has implemented a maternity benefit scheme – Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY 2.0) to empower mothers and to ensure their well-being.
PMMVY is a flagship initiative of the Government of India that was implemented by the Ministry of Women and Child Development in 2017. This scheme is designed to provide financial assistance to pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers from socially and economically backward classes (SEBC) of the society. The financial assistance is given for the first two living children provided the second child is a girl as per the PMMVY 2.0 norms. The benefit provided for a second girl child under PMMVY 2.0 is mainly to promote behavioural change towards a girl child.
Pregnant women (from the SEBC class of the society) of 19 years and above can avail of the PMMVY benefits
Employed pregnant women who suffer wage loss due to pregnancy become eligible for the benefits
The scheme benefits apply only to the first living child. PMMVY 2.0 norms apply to a second child provided the child is a girl. In the case of twins/ triplets in the second pregnancy, the benefits are only paid to the second girl child as per the norms of PMMVY 2.0.
