Diseases Caused by microorganisms: Understanding the risks

There are several types of microorganisms in the world. Some are helpful, while some are destructive. The ones that can cause harm are called pathogens. Can you believe you enjoy eating some awesome things because of these microorganisms? Cheese, wine, and bread are loved not only by one country but also by people around the globe, and this is possible only because of microorganisms. These cannot be seen by the naked eye, and as a result, you might end up forgetting about their existence. Only when you fall sick do you realise how powerful and life-changing something invisible can be.

Types of microorganisms

There are several types of microorganisms:

Virus

A virus is one of the many types of microorganisms that can infect all forms of life.

Risks

Viruses cannot replicate inside a living cell, but they can cause massive havoc once entered. They cause everything from your common cold to the life-threatening coronavirus pandemic. Some other diseases caused by viruses are mumps, measles, and smallpox. Viruses are found in all ecosystems of the world. You can fight against a virus by taking antiviral medicines, hydrating yourself, and resting enough. While most viral infections are infectious, your body is powerful enough to fight against most viral infections.

Bacteria

Bacteria are found everywhere, from deep inside the earth’s crust to inside a human body and even in a glacier. This single-celled organism is considered the oldest living thing on Earth. They are essential for the ecosystem.

Risks

Most bacteria are good, but some can make you sick. They multiply rapidly and damage tissue. They can cause diseases like tuberculosis, cholera, typhoid, syphilis, tetanus, strep throat, and urinary tract infections. Most bacterial infections can be cured using antibiotics under a doctor’s guidance.

Fungi

Fungi are mostly found in moist conditions. It is considered to be omnipresent. It includes moulds, mushrooms and yeasts. The black spots on your bread after its expiration date are a form of fungi.

Risks

Fungi are found in most skin infections. Athlete’s foot, ringworm and jock itch are some of the infections caused by fungi. Several oral medicines are available; you can also get some antifungal cream over the counter. Most people have suffered from a fungal infection in their lifetime, and it is entirely okay.

Parasite

Has three types of parasites- ectoparasites, helminths and protozoa. Parasites derive all their nutrients from the host’s body that they have entered.

Risks

Parasites cause diseases like malaria, dysentery, and amebiasis. Antiparasitic medicines are easily available, and you can easily cure yourself.

Microorganisms plan of action

Microorganisms make you sick with a detailed plan of action. All types of microorganisms follow the same route: They enter your body, start multiplying at top speed, attach themselves to your insides, fight the immune system, and start obtaining and enjoying your body's nutrients.

Conclusion

The most important thing to remember regarding all types of microorganisms is to be mindful of your health. When you feel a little low on energy, immediately take steps to figure out how to take care of yourself to conquer the microorganism and not vice-versa!
