Suresh Kumar drives more than 25,000 kilometres a year around Chennai, which means service intervals arrive quickly and he has always read the invoice line by line.

The first invoice for his electric car confused him. It was short, it was lower in cost than he was used to and a 43-year-old who has budgeted for petrol servicing for two decades found himself wondering whether the workshop had simply skipped things.

An electric car needs less routine maintenance than a petrol car, because most items on a petrol service list do not exist. No engine oil, no oil filter, no spark plugs, no timing belt, no clutch, no exhaust.

What remains still matters and one item surprises owners. The brakes need attention precisely because they are used so little.

There is a distinction worth holding on to throughout. Routine maintenance on an EV usually costs less than on a petrol equivalent. Accident repair usually costs more. Those are different budgets and confusing them is where most EV cost advice goes wrong.

Do electric cars need less maintenance than petrol cars?

Yes, for routine servicing. An electric drivetrain has a fraction of the moving parts of a combustion engine and most conventional service items simply do not exist on it.

An EV has no engine oil to change, no oil or fuel filter, no spark plugs, no timing belt, no clutch and no exhaust system. Removing those removes most of a conventional service.

What replaces them is a shorter list of checks rather than replacements, which is why an EV invoice looks sparse next to a petrol one.

The claim that electric cars are high-maintenance usually comes from confusing two things. Repairing an EV after a collision can cost more, because high-voltage components are expensive and the work needs certified technicians.

That is repair cost, not maintenance cost. It belongs in your insurance thinking rather than your servicing budget.

Notice what is absent rather than what is present. There is no oil change on that list and the most valuable component in the car, the battery pack, has no annual service ritual at all.

How often should you service an electric car?

Follow the interval in your owner's handbook, which is typically annual or distance-based and go by time rather than distance if you drive very little.

Manufacturers set the interval, commonly around once a year or a stated number of kilometres, whichever comes first.

The time-based half matters more than owners assume. Fluids, filters, rubber seals and brake components age while the car is parked, so a lightly used EV still needs its annual visit.

For a high-mileage driver the distance trigger arrives first and for an occasional driver the calendar does. Either way, the handbook figure is the one to follow rather than a general rule.

Why do EV brakes need attention if they last so much longer?

Because regenerative braking means the friction brakes are barely used and brakes that go unused corrode and seize rather than wear out.

This is the counterintuitive part of EV ownership and the one most likely to cost an owner money through neglect.

On a petrol car, frequent braking generates heat that dries moisture off the discs. An EV recovers most of its braking through the motor, so the friction brakes rarely get warm and moisture stays where it lands.

Two consequences follow and both are worse in a humid Indian climate.

  • Discs and calipers can corrode from underuse. Manufacturers commonly recommend cleaning and lubricating calipers periodically, particularly in corrosive environments.

  • A caliper that dries out can seize, dragging a pad against the disc. That causes uneven braking and quietly costs range, since the car is fighting a brake it cannot feel.

Brake fluid deserves its own mention. It absorbs moisture from the air over time regardless of how little you brake and contaminated fluid can corrode the braking system internals. Follow the replacement interval in your handbook even when the pads look new.

Ask for a brake inspection that includes caliper movement and a brake fluid moisture test, not just a pad thickness measurement. On an EV, pad thickness is the least informative number in the brake report.

Do EV tyres wear faster?

Often yes. An electric car is heavier than the equivalent petrol car and delivers full torque instantly and both work the tyres harder.

Battery packs add considerable weight and instant torque from a standstill adds load that a petrol engine builds up to gradually. Together they shorten tyre life.

Manufacturers commonly recommend more frequent rotation on EVs than on comparable petrol cars. Keeping to that schedule spreads wear and is an affordable way to protect tyre life.

Two habits help. Check pressures monthly, since under-inflation makes the motor work harder and costs range as well as tread. And have alignment checked if wear looks uneven, because an EV punishes misalignment faster than a lighter car does.

Budget for tyres as a genuine running cost on an EV rather than an occasional surprise. It is one of the few line items that moves the other way from the rest of the maintenance bill.

Can you service an electric car at any garage?

Routine work can often be done at a competent multi-brand workshop. Anything involving the high-voltage battery, motor or orange cabling needs a workshop certified for high-voltage systems.

The dividing line is straightforward once you know it exists.

Two cautions apply before you act on that. Warranty terms often require servicing at authorised workshops for the vehicle or battery warranty to remain valid, so read your warranty booklet before choosing on price alone. And after an accident, repairs generally need to go to a certified workshop regardless.

What does electric car maintenance cost compared with petrol?

Lower, in most cases, because the expensive recurring items on a petrol service do not exist.

Removing oil changes, filters, spark plugs and exhaust work removes the bulk of what a petrol owner pays for repeatedly. Longer-lasting brake pads reduce another regular cost.

What moves the other way is tyres and occasionally the specialist labour rate at a certified workshop.

Rather than trust a general figure, ask your dealer for the published service schedule with item-wise costs for the first five years before you buy or at your next service. Comparing that document against a petrol equivalent gives you your own number rather than an average.

How does maintenance affect insurance and resale?

A documented service history protects your resale price and battery health records are what a used EV buyer is actually trying to assess.

Used EV values in India still carry uncertainty and most of it concentrates on one question: how much battery capacity remains. A file of state of health readings answers it and an answered question commands a better price than an open one.

On insurance, two connections are worth knowing. Wear and tear is a standard exclusion in motor policy wording, so a component that fails through neglect is a maintenance matter rather than a claim.

And because the battery holds a large share of an EV's value, battery protection and zero depreciation add-ons exist for events such as water ingress and electrical damage.

Suresh's short invoice was accurate. The workshop had not skipped anything, because most of what he was used to paying for no longer exists on his car.

What Suresh changed was the one thing the invoice had underplayed. He now asks specifically for caliper inspection and a brake fluid moisture test at every service, keeps the state of health reading in a folder and has accepted that tyres will be his largest recurring cost.

Do the same three things. Read your handbook's service interval and follow it by time as well as distance. Ask for brakes to be checked for corrosion rather than only wear. And keep every battery health report, because in a few years that folder is what a buyer will pay for.
