Here is all you need to know about the new Kerala Traffic Fines

The news of reducing traffic fines by the Kerala State Cabinet provided a big relief to daily commuters. Effective from 24th September 2019, new rates of traffic fines have been decided under the new Motor Vehicle Act in Kerala. Check the new fines under the new rules.

Over-speeding Fine

The new over-speeding fine has been reduced from a maximum of INR 10,000 to a maximum of INR 5,000. The over-speeding fine for light motor vehicles has been reduced to INR 1,500 from INR 5,000. Heavy motor vehicles now have to pay INR 3,000 as opposed to INR 5,000, which was fined previously. Racing and speeding fines on cars and bikes have been reduced from INR 10,000 to INR 5,000.

Other violations

Drivers found driving without a helmet are liable to be fined INR 500, which was INR 1,000 previously. Other than that, drivers found to be driving while talking over the phone are liable to be fined INR 2,000 according to new rules, which used to be INR 10,000 previously.

Unchanged traffic penalties

1. Riding without a ticket is liable to be fined INR 500.

2. Driving without a license can attract a fine of INR 5,000.

3. Vehicles causing obstruction to traffic can be fined INR 500.

4. If drivers are found driving an unauthorized vehicle without a license, they are liable to be fined INR 5,000.

5. Drunk driving or under the influence of substances can attract a fine of INR 10,000 along with imprisonment for up to 6 months as a first offense. Second-time offenders can be imprisoned for up to 2 years and have to pay INR 15,000 as a fine.

6. Driving without insurance can attract a fine of INR 2,000 along with an imprisonment of up to 3 months for first-time offenders, while second-time offenders are liable to be fined INR 4,000 along with imprisonment for up to 3 months.

7. If individuals who have been deemed mentally or physically unfit for driving are found driving will be liable to be fined INR 1,000 for first-time offenders, while INR 2,000 is to be fined for second-time offenders.

The price reductions have been keeping the daily commuters in mind. Slashing prices of traffic fines has only reduced the burden on the common people, but it should be kept in mind that the fines are still in place, and the ultimate objective is to reduce traffic offenses.

There are still some strict restrictions and fines on drunk driving and other offenses. Moreover, you need to have your car insurance in place as it is also a traffic law.
