Pattern of a vehicle registration number

A vehicle registration number is a combination of alphabets and numbers. Let us decode the meaning of the various components of a registration number.

1. State code is the first 2 alphabets that represent the state in which the vehicle is registered. For example, MH is for Maharashtra, HR is for Haryana, etc.

2. District code is the first 2 numbers after the state code representing the district where the vehicle is registered. For example, MH01 is Mumbai South, MH02 is Mumbai West, etc.

3. Number series is the third part which is a combination of 2 or 3 alphabets representing the number series, once all the numbers in a series are used, the next series is used by the RTO.

4. A unique number is the last 4 digits that define the vehicle. These 4 numbers can be ordinary numbers allotted by the RTO or can be special or fancy numbers that are bought from the RTO. These numbers can range from 0001 to 9999.

Process of getting a special VIP number for your bike in India

To get an RTO fancy number, there is a bidding process involving an auction conducted by the RTO. Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) offers special numbers through the Vahan portal across all Indian states.

1. Register as a public user on the MoRTH website.

2. All the states where an auction of available fancy numbers is open will show.

3. Activate and log into your account and select your state under the state tab.

4. Provide your vehicle details during the activation process.

5. There will be different categories of numbers with different base prices.

6. The bidding starts from the base price and you are required to pay a fee including the base bidding price and registration amount.

7. The date and time of bidding is allotted.

8. The bidding result is declared online and you can check the same at ‘Auction Status’ and ‘Auction Result’.

9. If the number is allotted to you, pay the bidding amount or you get a refund of the base bidding amount already paid.

Category-wise VIP number plate price

Fancy vehicle numbers can be classified into 5 categories.

1. Category 1 (Super Elite) - It includes the number 0001. 0001 number plate price is ₹ 5 lakhs.

2. Category 2 (Single digit) - It includes the number 0002 - 0009. The prices for this category including the 0005 number plate price or the 0004 number plate price start at ₹ 3 lakhs.

3. Category 3 - It includes numbers like 0010 to 0099, 0786, 1000, 1111, 7777, and 9999 starting at a price of ₹ 2 lakhs.

4. Category 4 (Semi-fancy numbers) - It includes numbers like 0100, 0111, 0200, 0222, etc. The 4444 number plate price starts at ₹ 1 lakh.
