9 Traffic Rules You Probably Don't Know!

India tops the world in road crash deaths and injuries. Since the last few years, the number of accidents has been increasing at an alarming rate. There are many reasons for this. One of them is the lack of awareness about traffic laws and rules. Laws that govern traffic in India are not uniform across the country. The Central government of India has enacted many laws governing traffic, and it varies from state to state.

Traffic rules play a crucial role in keeping road users safe. We need to educate drivers about these rules and make sure that they follow them. Besides reducing the number of accidents, it is expected to improve the traffic situation in India. While it is important that people should be aware of all the traffic rules, many of us still might not be familiar with the few enlisted below.

Some traffic rules that you probably don't know:

• If a pedestrian is crossing the road, you must stop at least 10 feet away from the pedestrian.

• You are not allowed to park the car on a sidewalk or any curb that has a yellow line painted on it.

• If you are driving in a school zone, the speed limit is kept low. For example, it is 25 Kmph in Punjab and different for every state & type of vehicle. You should not pass another vehicle while driving in that zone unless there are two lanes of traffic going in the same direction as you and there is no oncoming traffic.

• When parking on a hill, put your wheels against the curb to keep your car from rolling down towards the street when parked uphill or downhill

• You can't drive with more than three people riding in one vehicle unless they're all wearing seat belts.

• The driver and passenger(s) must wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle, scooter, or bicycle and seat belts while driving.

• The requirement to use headlights during daytime hours or during foggy conditions

• Smoking is not allowed in a car if the vehicle has children under 16 years old present. Smoking is also not allowed in a car if it is carrying passengers who are pregnant and for 8 hours after the last passenger exits the vehicle.

• No person should stop or park a vehicle within 15 ft of any public utility building or service spot so as to interfere with the installation, operation, or maintenance of any service or equipment of the public utility.

You should follow traffic rules because they are there for the sole purpose of keeping you safe on the road. It's not a bad idea to follow them and stay safe as it will only help you become a better commuter and driver. One more important traffic rule is to have car insurance for the vehicle you are driving, and it can lead to fines & other legal punishment.
